Have you ever gotten an idea or concept outside of work, when you weren’t focused on a design problem? It’s not unusual since most initial ideas can occur when you get out of your head and are not thinking about it. This is the creative flow or what some refer to as inspiration. It’s often fleeting and if you don’t pay attention, it’s gone. Until the next one shows up.
Over the years I’ve found ways to connect to my creative flow in a more deliberate way. One of them is through meditation as it gets you in a place of stillness, free from the constant chatter of your thoughts. If sitting in a lotus position isn’t for you, there are so many other things that get you to that same state such as running, swimming, walking, hiking or traveling, etc, These methods offer opportunities to simply be, in the moment, to connect to a deeper consciousness to help you live a more creative life. So the next time you find yourself struggling to crack a concept or get a big idea, do something completely different and allow the creative flow in.
